Liver disease and ammonia intoxication.
The relation between ammonia intoxication and liver disease is not clear. Ammonia appears to be relatively non-toxic to normal individuals, whereas some patients with liver disease appear to be exquisitely sensitive to dietary protein, ammonia-releasing substances, and ammonium salts. In an attempt to elucidate this relationship the intravenous LD(50) of ammonium chloride was determined in both...
متن کاملAmmonia Intoxication in Hepatic Coma
Blood ammonia nitrogen was determined in 36 cases of hepatic coma and 63 cases of liver disease. Significant elevations (PL 0.001) were noted in coma due to hepatitis and cirrhosis and the mortality rate was 89% and 9 1.3% respectively. Raised ammonia nitrogen in hepatic coma is a sign of grave prognosis (JPMA 34 : 9, 1984).

متن کاملAmmonia intoxication in portal systemic encephalopathy.
Portal systemic encephalopathy (PSE) comprises of five major features, of which ammonia intoxication of the central nervous system is the only specific feature. Ammonia is a key intermediate in the metabolism of nitrogen. Oxidative deamination of aminoacids is one of the major ammonia producing pathways. It occurs predominantly in the liver, to a lesser extent kidneys and also in the brain. The...
